Response to Course Materials

September 25th
In class, we are working on close reading more specifically with poetry. Poetry is generally always a sore subject when brought up in school. I always find myself making these random connections that I feel as if make perfect sense but generally these ideas to not turn out to be the same ideas the author is trying to convey. People say that you can analyze poetry personally and that everyone finds out something different but i find that to not be true. I deal with the fact that poetry will always be something that i have to work with. Lots of practice will be needed on my part. The practice we do in class is incredibly helpful even if i understand or locate certain things only after Mrs. Holmes or someone else in class first brings it up, I think it gets my mind thinking and helps me read poetry differently then i usually do. Also the AP essays are something that we have been working on and i still feel as if i am confused about the exact format and how to write the essays. Maybe if we saw more examples of good essays that got an 8 or 9 would be helpful instead of having to base my essay on the one example 8 that we were given? Last major topic would probably be DIDLS, which i still have trouble differing between language, details, and diction. I guess i can differentiate they are just too similar sometimes and lines get iffy. Anyways basically i just need lots and lots of practice and that will probably solve all these issues.

  1. 1. You did a great job of referring to the things that we have been doing recently in class. You have shown development as a reader and writer and demonstrated genuine interest in the subject through accurate reflection.
    2. I think you need to use this blog to try to convey how you view DIDLS and receive input from other people who can help you refine and polish up your view and clear your confusion.
    3. Some other things that you may want to highlight include the notes that we have been taking on the chapters in the literature textbook, showing how that has aided your learning by expanding your store of literary terms. Other topics include the method of addressing the prompt and writing an essay that is reflective of critical thinking. How has the method that we were presented in class helped change your perspective towards writing an analytical essay? Has it helped you approach the prompt in a different way?
    4. Basically, I would suggest trying to incorporate all the things we have learned and explaining how that has impacted you as a reader and writer.

  2. Your response is very personable and engaging! You were open and honest which makes your writing easy to understand. You do a really good job of specifying what you had/have problems with and what you wish to work on more in class. The specific examples you use (like college essays) show that you really care about improving as a writer and want to learn more about the proper format.
You write a lot about what you need to work on, but you should add more about what you have learned! Although you say you need help differentiating between diction, details, and imagery, you could write about how one of the techniques (for example: diction) has helped you in your reading within or outside of AP English. You could also write about the Introduction lesson we had and what elements in that have helped you (or will help you) to write better introductions in the future. Overall, really good job!

  3. have you been sleeping in class... this is awful.....

jk george. I really like this because I have the same struggles with poetry. I really struggle with meaning in poetry more than probably anything else. Sometimes I misinterpret the auther, other times I try to read too deeply into something that is simple. I would look to point out that we definitely covered more than just poetry in class, but thats the only topic you really analyze. The rest you sort of just mention. But I find myself in the same boat with you in a lot of different areas. We can struggle together george :)
